Why a "Vibe Check" Isn't Enough
Most couples pick their officiant because they liked the first email, the profile photo, or a friend's recommendation. That's fine for vibe. It's not enough to know if the officiant is actually the right fit for your ceremony, your tradition, and your logistics.
The questions below cover four areas — experience, logistics, customization, and post-ceremony paperwork — that couples most often forget to ask until something goes wrong.
Experience and Style
You want an officiant whose background matches your ceremony, not just someone who says yes to every booking.
- How many weddings have you officiated? A meaningful ceremony isn't their 3rd or their 300th — what matters is whether their experience matches what you need.
- Do you specialize in interfaith, secular, or faith-specific ceremonies? "Yes I do all of them" can be a red flag. The best officiants are honest about the traditions they know deeply versus the ones they'll research for you.
- Can you describe your ceremony style? Are they warm and storytelling-led, formal and liturgical, or somewhere in between? Their answer should match what's in your imagination.
Logistics and Availability
The best officiant in the world can't help you if they aren't free on the date you need them.
- Are you available on our date? Get a hard yes or no — and ask about their backup if there's a personal emergency. The best officiants have a colleague they can hand a ceremony to gracefully.
- Will you travel to our venue, or do we meet virtually? Many couples now book officiants online and meet once or twice by video before the ceremony day. Clarify this upfront.
- What is your rehearsal involvement? Some officiants run full rehearsals. Others expect you to handle timing yourself. Make sure this matches your wedding planner's expectations.
Booking a wedding officiant through BlessFlow means the platform shows availability up-front, handles contracts, and processes payment — so you skip the email tag and book in minutes.

A canned script is fine for some couples. If personalization matters to you, ask explicitly.
- Can we write our own vows? Even if you're using a templated script, you'll usually want space to add personal vows. Most officiants welcome this; verify yours does too.
- Do you allow readings from non-traditional sources? Couples draw from poetry, song lyrics, family blessings, and pop culture. If your officiant insists on scripture-only, that's a fit conversation.
- Will you meet with us beforehand? A 30-minute conversation — in person or on video — usually produces a noticeably better ceremony than one built solely from email notes.
The Full Checklist
Here's the full 12-question list, ready to copy into a doc or paste into an email when you're interviewing officiants. Each question has a short note on what you're really asking.
- How many weddings have you officiated? Tells you whether they're established and where their specialty lies — destination weddings, interfaith ceremonies, secular scripts, etc.
- Do you specialize in interfaith, secular, or specific religious ceremonies? A specialist is almost always more comfortable than a generalist for any non-trivial ceremony.
- Can you describe the style of your ceremonies? Warm and personal? Liturgical? Modern? Their answer should match the energy you want on the day.
- Are you available on our ceremony date? Get a clear yes or no, don't settle for "probably." Confirm in writing once you decide.
- Will you travel, or do we work virtually? If your officiant is out of town, ask how they handle rehearsals and how many times they'll meet with you.
- What's your rehearsal involvement? Some officiants run the full rehearsal. Others expect your planner to handle it. Clarify the expectation.
- Can we write our own vows? Personal vows are becoming the norm. Most officiants welcome them, but you'll want to know their policy in advance.
- Do you allow non-traditional readings or rituals? This includes poems, song lyrics, family traditions, sand ceremonies, handfasting, etc.
- Will you meet with us beforehand? At least one planning call is the standard. Two is better. None is a yellow flag.
- What happens if you have an emergency on the wedding day? Every professional officiant has a backup. Ask who they are and whether you've met them.
- How do you handle the marriage license after the ceremony? They sign it, return it to the clerk within the legal window, and ensure your record is filed. Confirm they take this seriously — an unfiled license is a real problem.
- What's included in your fee, and what's extra? Rehearsal, travel, custom scripts, additional meetings, and ceremony length should all be crystal clear before you sign.
After you ask every question, ignore the answers for a minute and ask yourself: did I feel respected, listened to, and excited about working with this person? The best officiants check every logistics box AND make you feel like your ceremony matters to them personally.
